Colm Kelly

My interest in Triathlon started a little later in life. In the interest of staying fit and weight control I had joined a Masters swim club, then bought a bike at Canadian Tire, and started to run 2 blocks of the neighbourhood. At age 49 while living and working in Newfoundland I did my 1st sprint tri and later on that same year did an Olympic distance tri in Corner Brook, and I was hooked. I went on to do ITU Worlds in Cleveland, Perth, and Montreal. After relocating to London, in 1999 I completed my 1st marathon in Chicago and went on to run Boston in the spring, followed by my 1st Ironman in Lake Placid. To date I have completed 7 Marathons and 8 Ironman races, and with the benefit of Sheri’s coaching have had several podium finishes.

For the past number of years I have been a staff member of Sheri’s Florida Tri Camps as an organizer and coach. Swimming has always been a challenge for me since I started somewhat later in life. I have the endurance but need to constantly work on that elusive technique! Fortunately my strengths are on the bike and in the run where I usually place high in my age-group. My experience in the sport can be very helpful to beginning and intermediate triathletes of all ages.

At the age of 40 I was a cigarette smoking party princess,  I did quit smoking, but within a few of months the weight gain was …let’s say notable.  I began running (slogging), in order to combat the metabolism shift.  It was really tough, but I stuck with it and was soon able to up my mileage to 10km +.  I joined a ˝ marathon clinic, completed that, and then did a full marathon in 2002.

In the summer of 2003 my husband and I were planning a vacation in Lake Placid, Trying in vain to book a hotel,I  can remember hanging up the phone and telling my husband that there was “some Ironman thing going on”.  Karma!  There was a cancellation!  We went into town and I immediately saw hundreds of very fit people, a sea of bikes, and the of excitement in anticipation to race.  The atmosphere was electric.  Our curiosity got the better of us and so we watched the race the next day.  I was overwhelmed by this event.  Watching at the finish line I said to my husband, “I am going to do that one day”.  His response…..yah sure you are!!!

That September I completed my first tri-a-tri on my CCM mountain bike.  Since then, I have finished two Ironman:  Wisconsin and Lake Placid [where it all began for me] and several ˝ Ironman all the while trying very much to better improve times and techniques.

This sport has quickly become an integral part of my life.  I have never known of a sport with such supportive, positive and passionate people, all striving to meet their own goals, and yet still being able to take the time to support others in any way necessary.  I look forward to many years of racing with friends, while constantly working on improving.

I look forward to helping any entry level or beginner athletes looking for a great place to begin a regimented workout program to take their training to a new level.  Let’s build great results together.
